Mommy Makeover in Philadelphia
Introduction to Mommy Makeover
Dr. Lohner’s Specialty!
There is nothing comparable to the joy of being a mother. Unfortunately, pregnancy is often very harsh on a woman’s body and leaves her body looking drastically different from her pre-baby appearance. After childbirth and breastfeeding, women often experience a loss of breast volume, sagging tissues, and gain a thick, rounded abdomen. A woman’s pre-pregnancy body commonly cannot be restored by diet and exercise alone, and therefore surgical intervention is necessary to see the results she desires. This is where our Philadelphia mommy makeover procedure will help!
Dr. Ronald Lohner is a board-certified plastic surgeon, a proud member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and has been awarded Top Doc status for 16 consecutive years. Not only is Dr. Lohner an expert in mommy makeover surgery, but he prides himself on patient saftey and satisfaction.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
Let’s start with the basics
This surgical procedure is designed to restore a woman’s appearance by counteracting and directly addressing the physical effects of pregnancy. The procedure typically combines a tummy tuck with rejuvenating breast surgery which can range from augmentation to reduction or to a breast lift with or without implants. This combination of procedures can successfully restore an attractive size and shape to the breast (by successfully restoring full volume, size, and shape to the breast) as well as making the stomach flatter, providing a more balanced profile and appearance.

Who is the Best Candidate for Mommy Makeover?
An ideal candidate for the procedure is a woman who knows she is finished having children and is frustrated with her post-pregnancy body. Normally, patients are encouraged to delay having the surgery until they are completely finished having children to ensure that the results of this procedure are long-lasting. Similar to other cosmetic surgery procedures, patients should generally be in good health, have reasonable expectations, and be fully committed to the necessary recovery period after surgery.
What’s the First Step?
Patients interested in this procedure should begin by researching the procedure on their own and gaining as much information about the procedure as well as the surgeons who provide this procedure. Once the patient feels she understands the procedure and feels that this procedure may give her the results she desires, she should call to schedule a consultation at Lohner Plastic Surgery.
During the consultation appointment, potential patients will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the practice. Once in the consultation room, Dr. Lohner will begin by reviewing a patient’s medical history, current medications, and discuss the patient’s desired aesthetic goals. Next, he will examine the patient in an exam room, explaining the procedure, discussing potential risks, and the expected recovery process. This appointment is the perfect opportunity for the patient to raise any questions about the procedure that the patient found during their own research. If it is determined that this type of procedure is the procedure that best fits a patient’s needs, a surgical plan will be created
How to Prepare for a Mommy Makeover?
Once you have scheduled your surgical procedure, there are a few extra steps that will ensure satisfactory results and a smooth recovery process. Dr. Lohner will provide each patient with detailed post-operative instructions for you to review.
1. Ask questions
Don’t hesitate to ask any questions that may arise before or after your procedure. Your consultation appointment is the perfect opportunity to speak with Dr. Lohner directly about any questions you may have.
3. Pick up prescriptions
Have prescriptions filled and picked up prior to your surgery. These should be in an easily accessible place so you can take them as needed after your procedure.
5. Arrange for Assistance
After the first several days after your body contouring procedure, you will be extremely sore and tired. Heavy lifting and strenuous activities are off-limits to help you recover. You will be happy to have a close family or friend stop by daily to help you with laundry, picking up the kids, and making dinner. Assistance is usually helpful for a week or two after the procedure.
2. Arrange transportation
This body contouring procedure is usually performed as an outpatient procedure but can include an overnight stay in the hospital. You will not be able to drive yourself home after your stay. In order to make your transition from hospital to home as easy as possible, arrange for a family member or friend to help with transportation.
4. Schedule follow-ups
Mark your calendar and schedule your follow-up appointments as recommended by Dr. Lohner. During these appointments, Dr. Lohner will replace bandages, remove stitches, and assess your overall healing progress.
What to Expect on the Day of Surgery?
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes between three and four hours to complete. More painful aspects of these procedures include placing breast implants under the muscle or tightening the abdominal wall musculature. The exact nature of a patient’s recovery will depend on the specific procedures of the makeover.
Dr. Lohner will begin the procedure with either a modified or a full tummy tuck. To complete this tummy tuck, Dr. Lohner will start by making a horizontal incision well below the belly button and just above the pubic line. Next, Dr. Lohner will remove excess fatty tissue and skin. Liposuction is often used to shape and contour the abdomen, waist, and hips. Unwanted tissue will be excised, and the muscle will be tightened. The belly button will be repositioned, and then the incision will be sutured and closed.
A breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lift, or masto augmentation will add volume and shape to the breasts using saline or silicone implants. Dr. Lohner will help you decide during your consultation appointment what type of implants are best for your figure and restore that natural youthful, pre-baby body you desire. Dr. Lohner will begin this Breast Augmentation portion by making either a Periareolar incision (an incision around the nipple) or an Inframammary incision (under the breast fold). He will then position the implants, and finish with dissolvable sutures to assist with proper healing.
Additional procedures may also be performed to achieve optimal results from your surgical makeover. Additional procedures include Liposuction or Breast Lift. While one of the benefits of the surgery is that all of these procedures are completed at one time, these surgeries can be broken into components and performed as separate surgeries as needed.
Mommy Makeover Recovery
Patients can anticipate that their recovery will vary significantly between two and six weeks. Initially, many patients experience swelling. The swelling tends to subside after the first three weeks post-surgery. A compression garment will be given to each patient after surgery and is worn for the first several weeks to assist with swelling and fluid accumulation. Patients can experience significant pain and discomfort over the first week. Dr. Lohner will prescribe the appropriate pain medications to be filled prior to surgery and will help keep the patient resting comfortably after surgery. A liquid or soft diet may be required for the first 24-48 hours after surgery.
Patients generally feel well enough to return to work and other daily routine activities about two weeks after surgery. However, strenuous exercise should be postponed for four to six weeks after surgery. The results of the procedures will not be immediately apparent, they will take some time to fully unveil themselves, especially as the swelling and bruising subside. As the body heals over the next six weeks to three months, the patient will start to see the full and more noticeable results.
Mommy Makeover Potential Risks
Body contouring at Lohner Plastic Surgery is a safe and effective procedure, and this is one of Dr. Lohner’s specialty procedures. As with similar procedures, there are small risks for complications. Potential risks of a surgical makeover include infection, as with any cutting of the skin, scarring, excessive bleeding, nerve damage, and asymmetry.
